Club History
Dave brought Alan Greig up to international standard leading to selection for Scotland. He coached Martin Harris from 15-18 years laying foundation for his later international successes and Olympic selections, and also another backstroke specialist in Christiano Kapp who won the senior National 50m backstroke in 1991. In 1997 Mike Fibbens, British record holder and three time Olympian, came out of retirement, joined our team and went on to selection for the European Championships 1998, 1999 World Championships in Perth, Australia, followed by a World Cup win in 1999. In this time he set some outstanding club records including one of the few swimmers to go under 50 seconds for short course 100m freestyle. In 2000 Mike was selected for the European championships in Helsinki and set Masters World records on 50m & 100m freestyle. Our Masters section continues to thrive. In 1997 and 2000 we set GB and European Masters relay records and World Championship golds were won by Nuala Muir-Cochrane and Mike Fibbens. Nuala set many GB and European mastes records on freestyle and individual medley during 2004 and Matthew Chappell set a new GB and European record in 200m breaststroke in April 2004. Nuala and Matt have inspired a recent resurgence in the level of Masters participating in competition, winning 4 golds each at the World Championships in Italy in which 7 other Masters also competed. No less than 42 Masters represented the club at the Middlesex County Masters Championships in June 2004, when the Club won the Best Club trophy for the first time under Coach Lynn Malcolm. In 2005, 11 masters will represent the Club at the European masters’ championships in Stockholm, Sweden. (Continued.....)
