Sunday evening saw Camden Swiss Cottage swimming club’s junior team (12 years and under) secure promotion from the National Junior Swimming league division 2 in their first season. Coach Gill Muir was delighted with the performance, “The team was outstanding winning 20 of the 49 events and only being placed outside the top 3 in 9 events, …just reward for all their hard work in training.”
Camden who joined the National Junior Swimming League this season were competing in the division two final against the top five teams in the division: Chelmsford, Edmonton Phoenix, Erith, Rochford and Greenwich Borough Mariners; and lead from start to finish of the 49 event competition. The club had plenty of encouragement from their supporters in the gallery, who were in “good voice” and there was lots for them to cheer about.
The club dominated in the relay events winning 11 of the 17 races. There were numerous strong individual performances from the team, but the most pleasing come from the youngest members of the team who at 9 years of age are at the beginning of an exciting swimming career. Indigo Mathews (9) who took 1st place in the 25 meters freestyle (16.41 seconds) and fly (17.15 seconds) both in new personal bests. Carter Nelson (9) winning the 25 meters backstroke (20.69 seconds) well inside her personal best. The two girls then continued their winning ways when they combined with Maddy Hookway and Brennan Megregianin in the 4x25 meter freestyle relay; Darcey Hookway then replaced Carter in the 4x25 individual medley relay to keep up the winning momentum.
The 9 year old boys were also in winning ways; Sebastian Maskrey remained undefeated in the 25 meter breastroke, having won the event in the previous two rounds. Sebastian then teamed up with fellow 9 year olds, Segev Gonen Cohen, Yohann Panthakee and Rory McKinnon to win the 4x25 meter freestyle and individual medley relays.
Winning the second division final and gaining promotion in our first season is a terrific result and underlines the strength in depth at all levels in the club.
