14 Year old Rosie Hughes becomes the 19th national qualified Camden Swiss Cottage swimmer this season.
Shrugging off the last week's disappointment of being disqualified for an infringement of the rules on the turn, Rosie, who swims under the direction of Coach Mark Allen, swam a two second personal best time 1.07.77 (50m split 32.92) for the 100m backstroke to get inside the national qualifying standard of 1.08.25. She finished 4th in the UK Challenge Meet held at Hatfield in the University of Hertfordshire 25m pool. Rosie also swam a narrow personal best on the 100m freestyle of 1.03.91.
Adding to the events they have already qualified for at nationals were Ed Graham and Leo Jaggs. Ed Graham (15 years) swam a seven and half second personal best short course time in 400m free with 4.12.46 (NQT 4.13.91) to finish 4th in the boys 15/16 years. Ed once again was rewarded for the consistency in his training with outstanding splits of 59.66, 1.04.93, 1.04.70, 1.03.17 to put him 1.45 inside the time standard. Ed was also competing in the 200m freestyle where he knocked an outstanding 5.59 of his previous best time with a 2.01.90.
Team mate Leo Jaggs, also 15 years, gained his second qualifying time with a fast 54.97 (NQT 55.10) knocking off 1.75 from his previous best time finishing 11th on the 15/16 100m freestyle. The UCS schoolboy, showing talent as a freestyle sprinter, only managed to break the 60 second barrier for the first time last July and has made rapid improvements in his level of skill as well as strength, says Coach Dave Hobbs. Leo also demonstrated the speed he has on the 50m freestyle with a fast 25.58, lowering his best time by seven tenths of a second.
Twelve year old Amelia Brown was in outstanding form taking gold on the 50m freestyle, setting a new competition record of 29.59. She achieved 1.04.31 for the 100m freestyle, earning her 6th place in the girls 11 / 12 years age group.
