Camden’s youngsters showed real promise last weekend winning the second round of the M11 Junior League.
It was a great all round team performance with many swimmers integrating from both the Development and Intermediate Junior Squads at Highgate and Swiss Cottage. Even though some key swimmers were missing due to racing at Coventry the Camden team still managed to dominate, this being a true reflection of the club’s extensive and well managed swimming programme.
After a solid start to the league campaign the teams’ ambition for promotion into the first division is certainly achievable after a second place in round one and dominating round two. The swimmers remain confident and ready to face their opposition in the all important third round taking place on the 28th of June.
There were numerous notable individual performances but Elizabeth Vann, 10, who trains with the Swiss Cottage Development group, produced many inspirational personal bests. Elizabeth helped the team to third place in both the Girls 10 years 50m breaststroke finishing with 47.58 and on the 50m Fly with 44.38. She then combined with Maggie Hamley, Indigo Mathews and Rowan Thomas on the 4 x 25m Medley Relay when she produced a scintillating 15 seconds on the 25m freestyle and later on in the program Gaby Hungate propelled the fabulous quartet to another victory in the 4x25 Freestyle.
Both the boys and girls 9 year old teams were untouchable and this success gives the club great hope for the future. The girls freestyle team were triumphant in both relays, which consisted of Maddy Hookway, Brennan Megregian, Indigo Mathews and Carter Nelson and Darcey Hookway replaced Carter on the Medley relay.
The boys were equally impressive with Sebastian Maskrey showing off his talent on the breaststroke by winning the individuals in two successive rounds.
Other outstanding swims came when the boys 11 years team dived in, recently recalled from National duty with the clubs senior national league team in Sheffield. Theo took first place on the 50m backstroke with a new time of 37.55 and so too did team-mate Hok Wong on the 50m Free with 32 seconds. Both Hok and Theo teamed up with James Slade, Ben Hatch and Dania for the relays.
10 Year Old Rowan Thomas improved by two seconds in the space of a couple of weeks on the 50m Freestyle bringing her time down to 36.10 and Rebecca Peake had a convincing win in the 50m breaststroke with a new P.B of 43.70.
Sophia Parvizi-Wayne who has been struggling with a knee injury was in cruise control touching in on the 50m Free with 30.50 and with consistent training could find herself challenging for medals at next year’s County Age Groups.
Well done to all the swimmers taking part who were a credit to the swimming club and keep training hard towards the third round.
