Camden had an impressive weekend of swimming at the London Region championships held at Crystal Palace.
Camden Swiss Cottage gained more national qualifiers with Kat Spooner & Joel Sand all qualify for nationals giving the club it 16th individual qualified individual swimmer and a bonus for the first time for over 15 years a relay qualified with the boys 4 x 200 Freestyle youth relay.
Devon Robins took triple gold with her first on the 200m freestyle and although already qualified short course (25m pool) gained her time long course in a time of 2.10.54. Her second gold medal came on the 800m freestyle having never swam the event before with a time of 9.31.73. The 100m butterfly made it a hat trick of gold’s in a time of 1.03.94. She also took the silver on the 400m freestyle in 4.37.19. Director of swimming Dave Hobbs said Devon demonstrated what an outstanding athlete she is racing lots of races back to back over a range of strokes and distances showed she has the ability to achieve at the very highest level.
Other golds went to Alex Mackay who won double gold on the 400 IM and the 200 Free in time of 4.42.62 and 1.57.03 respectively. He also took the silver with 2.14.07 on the 200m backstroke. Naiomi Wakeham-Aredes won by a very narrow margin of just 8 one hundredths of a second in taking the gold medal and breaking the 2.30 mark for the first time with 2.29.99 on the 200m Individual Medley. Sarah Taylor Reid demonstrated how well her breaststroke is going by winning the 50m event in 37.44 (.63 PB) and taking bronze medals in 200m 2.53.79 (2.8 PB) and 100m events 1.20.62 (.24 PB).
15 year old Kat Spooner swam a 3 second personal best to sensationally gain her first ever national qualifying time on the 200m freestyle in a time of 2.11.44 to earn the silver medal in the final with Camden making it first and second with the gold going to team mate Devon Robins (see above). She went on later to narrowly miss the 100m free qualifying time by the narrowest margin (1.01.13 NQT)but still a great swim with 1.01.69 to earn the her second silver. She also was in on the medals for the 50m freestyle breaking 29 for the first time in 28.96 earning the bronze. Kat also swam a 4 second PB on the 400 free taking 6th place in 4.41.49.
Sixteen year old Joel Sands became CSCSC 16th national qualifier on the 800m freestyle, getting inside the 8.56.60 time standard by 4 seconds with a time of 8.52.96 coming 4th and to qualify for the second year running. Joel who trains on average 9 sessions a week was rewarded for his commitment with nearly a 8 second personal best in taking the bronze medal on the 400m freestyle in a time of 4.19.99.
The boys youth 4 x 200m freestyle relay team of took the bronze medal in 8.10.29 but more importantly earned the team the opportunity to race in the summer nationals. The quartet of Ed Graham 2.03.65, Metin Ayhan 2.04.3, Joel Sands 2.05.60, and Alex Mackay 1.56.5 where delighted to earn the chance to swim at nationals in what is the only opportunity to qualify for the event.
Metin Ayhan had his best ever long course meet with a silver medal on the 200m butterfly in 2.18.87, over a two second personal best in taking 6th on the 100m butterfly with 1.01.06, 5 second PB on the 400m free in 4.25.72 in taking 5th place and 2.02.81 on the 200m freestyle another massive PB by 3.8 seconds.
Other medals went to Ilya Skliarov winning his first ever regional medals on the 100m breaststroke in 1.12.46, Reut Benaim a silver on the 50m fly in 30.38 taking .6 off her best time and a bronze on the 200m fly in 2.31.32. Jessica Hobbs on girls 15 year old 200m IM in a personal best time of 2.30.71 knocking 3.5 seconds of her best time. Sophie Rittenhouse swam 1.10.75 to take the bronze medal on the 100m backstroke and 4th place on the 200m backstroke but an 8 second PB with 2.33.98. Rosie Hughes 33.56 earned her the silver medal on the 50m backstroke in a personal best of 3.9 seconds. Leo Jaggs 26.37 to take the bronze on 50m freestyle.
Other swimmers swimming well were Santiago Parilli on the 100m free 57.23 in taking 6th place in the final and knocking over 2 seconds off his best time and a 5 second PB with 2.03.92 for the 200m freestyle. Harry Needs 55.30 (55.16 NQT)on the 100m free, 2.00.64 (1.59.56)on the 200m freestyle and 25.60 (25.52 NQT) on the 50m freestyle were all within a cats whisker of national qualifying times. Ed Graham 4.21.37 (NQT 4.21.27) on the 400m free.
