Swiss participated in The 39th National Speedo Swimming League Cup Final at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.
The Speedo League established in 1964 has over 500 teams competing nationwide with the culmination of the top twenty squads competing this year at Ponds Forge Pool.
For the first time in the club’s history Camden was in the A Team Final, a highlight of Swiss Cottage’s impressive team achievements for the year.
After a series of three gruelling rounds in the London League last autumn against teams as far as a field as Ipswich and Colchester, Camden Swim Club coached by Dave Hobbs won its way to Sheffield. The Camden team of 40 swimmers entering individual and relay events were in a very competitive field, some of the teams having members on the upcoming Olympic 2008 British squad.
Camden Swiss Cottage finished 8th with 250 points. Plymouth Leander Swimming Club won the Speedo Cup with 399 points; Millfield School of Somerset came in 2nd with 364. Only 34 points separated the tightly packed 3rd through 8th placed teams. Camden Swiss Cottage was a full 66 points ahead of the 9th place team.
Individually for Camden there were many impressive performances with two individuals claiming victory. Devon Robins winning first place with 1:05.10 in 15/under 100m Fly and Reut Benaim also taking first in 100m Fly for the 13/under category with a 1:07.45. Reut’s time would qualify her for nationals in a licensed meet. Devon also placed 4th in Girls 15/under 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:18.55 and in Girls Open 200 Individual Medley finishing 5th with a personal best (PB) time of 2:25.51.
Four Camden swimmers earned 2nd place finishes each also achieving new personal bests. Tamsin McKinnon placed second in two 10-11 year old individual events swimming an impressive 37.25 in 50m Breaststroke and achieving 30.10 in 50m Freestyle. The freestyle converted is a club record of 29.56! Ensger Kotterink also placed second in 13/under 100m Fly with 1:01.32. Vincent Neves in event 36 the boys 10-11 50m Free earned second with 30.69.
Third place in the relays went to the 9-11 Girls 4x50m Freestyle team, Boys 9-11 Freestyle 4x50m Relay team and 13/under Boys 4x50m Medley Relay team. The 9-11 girls had a time of 2:06.29, swimmers including Kelly Hookway, Amelia Brown, Clara Ahmed and Tamsin McKinnon. With a time of 2:05.26 the Boys 9-11 Freestyle relay included Billy Bradley, Will Rittenhouse, Eugene Potter and Vincent Neves. A third successful relay for Camden with a time of 2:02.33 consisted of Iao Wong leading with backstroke, Alex Peake swimming breaststroke, Ensger Kotterink butterfly and Leo Jaggs completing the team in the freestyle leg.
Other great swims were achieved by Kelly Hookway finishing 4th with a PB in girls 10-11 50m Fly. 5th place finishes were earned by Eugene Potter in both of his individual events, the 50m Back with 37.84 and 50m Breaststroke with a 40.49, also personal bests. Other 5th place finishes were by Ed Walsh in the open Fly, Iao Wong in 13/under 100m Back, Matt Chappel in the open 100m Breast and Harry Needs in 15/under Breast.
