A team of 11 Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers competed at the annual Burns meet which was held in Sheffield at the 50 meter Ponds Forge Pool.
The event was one of British Swimming’s “Preparation Meets” and attracted top athletes including many Olympians from across the UK.
The team put in some outstanding performances and picked up 8 medals overall including 3 new qualifying times for the British Championships to be held the end of March.
In outstanding form was Devon Robins (16) picking up a silver medal and gaining a senior British championship time in the 100m butterfly in a time of 1.02.81s (British Champ QT 1.02.88) and being way inside the National Qualifying Time (NQT 1.07.66s). Devon also swam a personal best time of 1.00.33 to gain a national qualifying time for the 100m freestyle in (NQT 1.00.72). She then went on to swim a personal best time on the 200 free of 2.07.27 also inside the NQT.
15 year old Leo Jaggs also gained the tough British championship qualifying standard on the 100m freestyle with 54.43 (British Champ QT 54.45) finishing 9th in the joint 15/16 age group but being the fastest 15 year old in this high level meet.
The club’s third qualifying time for the British Championships came from Kelly Hookway (13) in the 50m freestyle with a time of 28.78 (British Champ QT 29.01) finishing just outside the medals with 4th place. Kelly picked up medals by finishing second in the 50m butterfly in a time of 31.39s and a bronze in the 100m butterfly in 1.09.98s.
Felix Samuels (16) put in two silver medal winning swims both in National Qualifying Times (NQT) in the 50m and 100m freestyle in times of 24.42s (NQT 25.31s) and 53.22s (NQT 53.22s).
Harry Needs (17) turned in some solid performances and picked up 3 bronze medals and a National Qualifying Time Harry’s NQT came in his third place in the 200m individual medley in 2.11.96s (NQT 2.16.59s). His other medal winning performances were in the 50m backstroke (28.22s) and butterfly (26.34s).
Dave Hobbs, Head Coach commenting on the weekends results said “Overall I’m very pleased with how the team performed; there were lots of PB’s, 3 more swimmers qualifying for the British Championships that have some of the toughest qualification times out there. This was an important meet in the British Swimming calendar as a part of our preparation to swim well at the end of our cycle, our athletes have acquitted themselves well with either personal best or solid performances.”
