GLL Sport Foundation – Update Athlete Support Opportunities
Posted: Wednesday 27th January 2010
The GLL Sport Foundation athlete support for 2010 is now open for applications.
This is open for all athletes within GLL partnership regions. click here.
To clarify a few questions regarding athletes in receipt of additional funding resources;
1. SportAid submissions will be picked up - no need to resubmit to SportAid.
2. Other funding does not prevent applicants applying to the GSF, as a modest 'top-up' fund has been created to support athletes who are already in receipt of SportAid or other organisation funding.
3. Athletes can therefore apply directly to the GLL Sport Foundation even if they have previously received funding from SportsAid or other organisation. Our partnership work with SportAid involves verification of rankings, and funding received to assist us in considering the athlete for an additioanl funding award.
Background information - GLL Sport Foundation
In 2009 more than 650 athletes, across 50 different sports received financial grants and GLL training memberships from the Foundation. This made the Foundation one of the largest independent supporters of young athletes in London and the South East.
The Foundation has been established specifically to help young people develop their sporting potential and aims to reduce the financial burden of training and competition costs on talented young athletes, many of whom aspire to participate in the 2012 London Olympics, Paralympics and beyond into 2016.
We are keen that our support ties in with National Pathways for talent identification and development with links direct to National Governing Bodies of Sport and other sporting clubs and organisations. In 2010 we will continue to work in partnership with SportsAid to receive nominations from NGBs and to help us validate applications received.
Our experience suggests that many young athletes last year successfully applied for support after seeing details from NGB’s and we hope this will be the case again in 2010. Our target for 2010 is to reach as many as 800 athletes with financial and training support.
Information on how to apply is available on the GLL Sport Foundation website . To enable the Foundation to be successful in reaching athlete within its Partnership Boroughs please forward this information to Sports Clubs, Regional Coaches and talented athletes on your records whom may be eligible for awards. The deadline for applications is 1 March 2010.
