Whenever you join a club, and share a lane with other swimmers there are certain guidelines that will help you enjoy that experience. We want you to get the most out of your coaches, have a standard of lane etiquette across all sessions as well as a few simple guidelines that will help to keep good atmosphere and to allow for everyone to get as much as possible out of the training sessions.
1. If there is anything specific you may like the coach to help you with or work on feel comfortable to ask them, they are there to help.
2. If you would like to be timed on a specific swim ask the coach. You don't have to wait until you are asked.
3. Know (or ask) the speed of the people in your lane so you can get the right speed order in your lane (fastest to slowest). This may be different depending on sprint/speed type sets to endurance sets.
4. If you are getting caught up give way and let the swimmer pass, this is usually best done at the end of a rep or alternatively it can be done with minimal disruption on a turn by anticipating when they will catch you, pull over to the side or touch turn while they pass.
5. If the opposite is happening and you are catching someone up be patient and follow the protocol above.
6. Do not keep changing positions in the lane as effects rest intervals and this can become annoying to other swimmers.
7. Don’t stop in the middle of the set, if you are unable to make the set you are most likely in the wrong lane. It is more beneficial to complete the set the way you have been asked, than to try and swim above your ability level.
8. Don't tailgate! This is very annoying to most swimmers. Wait at least 5 seconds (unless you have specifically been told to leave smaller gaps by the coach) before you push off. If you're always catching the person in front of you, either go ahead of them on the next swim or leave 10 seconds apart. (see point 3)
9. Start and finish every swim at the wall
10. Keep the ends clear and let your fellow swimmers finish every swim at the wall. Even if the lanes are crowded, the last person has the same rights as the first. As soon as you finish move out of the way.
11. Learn to read the pace clock and know both your time and the interval. Stay on the interval and help others to stay on the interval.
12. Since lane assignment is not an exact science be prepared to be moved (change lanes). You may have to swim in a different lane from one practice to another or even during a session. Numbers in lanes will vary from day to day as well as sets being different, co-operate by moving lanes if you see the need or the coach ask you to. Overall we aim to get the balance of numbers per lane right.
13. Turn up on time, being late is disruptive.
14. If you are late, the lanes may have been organized, or busy you may have to swim somewhere different form your usual lane. Always JOIN the other swimmers where they currently are in the workout.
15. Once the practice starts get straight in the pool. Do not stand on the side social chatting with other club members.
16. Don't change the interval without conferring with the coach and then your fellow swimmers. From time to time the coach may have got the intervals wrong, it’s no big deal, and with consultation they will be quite happy to make changes to something more suitable.
17. Don’t change the set without consultation with the coach, on occasions it may be possible to run some sets alongside others depending on how busy the session is. If you would like to do something different consult with the coach, if it is possible it will be done. The coaches are there to help.
18. Don’t chat while the coach is giving instructions, this is disruptive to others and a distraction to the coach.
19. If you feel unhappy about anything in the session or the pool, most things can be addressed and worked out, Communication is essential, stay calm and talk to the coach.
20. Bring a positive attitude and a smile with you to the pool.
21. Finally be understanding of fellow swimmers, we all make mistakes from time to time a little humour and get on with the session helps everyone enjoy the practice.
