A team of 27 Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers competed at the London Regional Winter Championships at the weekend at Barnet Copthall.
Two categories of awards are given at the championships: one for 16 years and under (Juniors) and an open section with a final swum for open events. Camden reached 17 finals and bagged 21 medals with several swimmers achieving national qualifying times.
The girls were in fine form, with Devon Robins (16) and Reut Benaim (15) leading the way. Devon picking up one gold two silvers and a bronze plus two national qualifying times, the gold came in the age group 400m freestyle in a time of 4.27.4s and she finished second in the open event. Devon’s National Qualifying times came in the 200m butterfly in a time of 2.21.9s (2.24.86 NQT) where she finished in second place and in the 200m freestyle where she picked up the bronze in a time of 2.06.8s (2.07.55s NQT). Reut Benaim picked up the gold and a national qualifying time in the 100m age group butterfly in a time of 1.04.09 (1.06.06 NQT), she also made the open final for this event where she picked up the bronze. Reut added an age group silver to her tally in the 200m butterfly in 2.25.2s.
Not to be out done the boys pulled in substantial medal haul with Felix Samuels (16) collecting a gold in the age group 100m freestyle in a time of 53.33 and a bronze in the open category of this event. He also added to his gold haul with a strong swim of 2.15.87s in the 200m individual medley. Alex Mackay (17) recorded a national qualifying time and collected the gold in the 400m individual medley in a time of 4.36.5 s (4.41.6 NQT), plus a bronze in the 1500m freestyle in 16.17.92s. Bogac Ayhan (15) was also a multiple medallist collecting a silver in the 100m back age group event in 1.01s and a bronze in the 100m butterfly age group event with a time of 59.7s.
Other Camden medallist were: Leo Jaggs (15), silver in the 50m freestyle 25.03s, Joel Sands (16,) bronze in 1500m freestyle 16.49s, Harry Needs (17), bronze 200m butterfly 2.08.0s, Tamsin McKinnon (13), 100m breaststroke 1.19.6 s and Santiago Parilli (16), bronze in the 200m individual medley 2.19.1s.
Dave Hobbs, Head Coach commenting on the weekends results said “Overall I’m very pleased with how the team performed, especially as we had so many younger swimmers qualifying for the event with several of them making open finals.”
Tamir Gonen-cohen is swimming in the Israeli National this week and has just broken her own long Course PB for 100m Fly, going 1.10.31 and winning Gold....
